Hi writers! We’re back from a week off, and today I have a writing prompt for you about unexpected gifts. Two summer ago I moved to a new house that had a little garden plot for my use, right outside my office window. Besides flowers, that first summer and winter I had a bird feeder out there, with mixed seeds, including sunflower seeds. Last fall my neighbors got an outside cat that spends a lot of time in our yard, so I reluctantly decided I should stop putting seeds out for the birds, lest I unintentionally put birds out for the cat.
But unbeknownst to me, the birds had done some planting of their own, and several tall sunflowers grew in my garden that summer. I was delighted! I love sunflowers, but my attempts to grown them on my own had never been successful. What a nice gift to receive, through no work of my own! And the birds and bees loved the sunflowers, too, along with the mint planted by a previous resident, that has spread itself around the border of the garden.
This year the sunflowers have seeded themselves again, even more this time. Fifteen or so, I think? They are about to bloom, friends people-height to keep me company while I work with their bright faces.
For your prompt this week, write about an unexpected gift. Maybe a short story of an old couple who worked hard their whole lives but always went hungry until a badger dug a hole under their house revealing a hidden treasure! Or a time when a friend brought you flowers, or cookies, or just a listening ear when you were low. It could be something small or something big, but something that wasn’t asked for or earned, just given freely by the earth, or friends, or God, or the moon and stars.
Looking forward to see what you write!
Love,
Jessica
